ISAH - Pentecost excursion 2024

The destination of this year's ISAH Pentecost excursion was the Ruhr region. On 21 May 2024, we were guests at the Remondis Lippe Plant. The Lippe Plant is home to numerous waste disposal facilities, which we were able to see as part of our tour (including entering the flue gas cleaning residue storage). We were then given guided tours of the facilities for recycling electrical appliances (mainly old fridges), plastics recycling and rendering. After the visit to the Lippe Plant, we went to the Green Centre in Essen and visited the university district, which is rightly regarded as an exemplary "sponge city quarter".

On the second day, we were guests at the Emschergenossenschaft and here at the Bottrop sewage treatment plant. We were welcomed with great hospitality and given a tour of 3 stations: The sewage treatment plant including sludge digestion as well as the modern solar-thermal sludge drying and the Bottrop pumping station. It was an impressive experience for the students to be able to experience the versatility and also the sometimes very large dimensions of our specialised field.
