ISAH technical excursion 2025 - Exciting practical insights

As in 2024, the traditional technical excursion of the Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Wast Management (ISAH) at Leibniz Universität Hannover took us to North Rhine-Westphalia - and offered the participating students impressive insights into practice, technology and water protection.
The programme started on 10 June with a visit to the Veltins brewery. During a tour of the production facility and the company's own wastewater treatment plant, the students were not only able to experience the brewing process up close, but also learn about the special features of industrial wastewater treatment - all with a direct link to the Master's module in Industrial Water Supply and Water Management.
The tour then continued to the Gasometer Oberhausen, where the Planet Ocean exhibition provided a special visual experience with impressive installations and images relating to the world's oceans.
The second day of the excursion began with a guided tour of the Emschergenossenschaft's Dortmund-Deusen wastewater treatment plant. A comprehensive technical upgrade is currently being implemented here. A particular highlight for the students was the fourth purification stage, which specifically removes trace substances from the wastewater.

Next on the programme was a visit to the ‘Emscherauen’ - including an expert walk along the renaturalised Emscher, newly created vineyards, ‘blue classrooms’ and beautiful parkland. Afterwards, we were able to visit the Mengede flood retention basin, which was impressive given its size.

We would like to thank all our hosts for the exciting and informative visits. They were two very insightful days, which once again demonstrated that Impressions from the field cannot be conveyed in the lecture in the same way and thus enrich our teaching immensely. The students were thrilled - and we are already looking forward to the technical excursion in 2026!
