World Water Day 22 March: Water and Gender – „Where water flows, equality grows“

Today, 22 March 2026, is World Water Day. The UN theme, ‘Water and Gender’ (‘Where water flows, equality grows’), highlights the fact that the global water crisis does not affect everyone equally. In many places, women and girls bear the brunt of the burden of collecting water and managing household water needs, meaning they are particularly affected by insufficient water availability. The UN therefore calls for women to be involved on an equal footing at all levels of water management – from the planning of technical infrastructure to political decision-making. Women should play an active role in shaping this change, whether as engineers, farmers, scientists, sanitation specialists or community leaders.

Although ISAH’s research is primarily focused on technical and scientific aspects, it makes an important contribution to addressing key challenges in the water sector. These include, in particular, the protection of water resources, the sustainable treatment of wastewater, and the further development of resilient infrastructure in the context of climate change. ISAH’s research thus helps to make water management systems fit for the future and to design material cycles more efficiently, thereby creating an important foundation for the sustainable and equitable use of water as a resource. Our research is also significantly shaped by women: with a female representation of around 60% in both academic and non-academic roles, research projects and future solutions are actively shaped by a variety of perspectives.

Technological innovations form the basis for sustainable and equitable water systems. However, World Water Day highlights that safeguarding water as a resource is not merely a technical task, but must always be considered within the context of social issues.
