The BlueGreenCity-KI project (https://www.linkedin.com/company/bluegreencity-ki) has established a strong consortium to develop and test an AI tool for improved planning, irrigation, and maintenance of urban trees and other urban green infrastructure. The project aims in particular to use real-time sensors in and around green spaces to obtain a comprehensive overview and accurate description of the current status, and then to use this information to generate forecasts and implement specific operational (irrigation) processes using new AI solutions. The Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Waste Management will be particularly involved in the following key areas of the project: 

i)    In the context of sponge city development, an AI-supported method is being developed and tested to identify and connect conventional and unconventional storage spaces for rainwater and other alternative water resources in urban areas in terms of water management.
ii)    In addition, in the context of the maintenance and operation of green spaces, issues relating to the water qualities required for different uses will be investigated and specific technical decentralized treatment solutions for achieving these qualities will be tested.
This is intended to ensure that sufficient water is always available to maintain urban green spaces and to significantly reduce the burden on the drinking water supply.

As the project is part of the “KI-Leuchttürme für Umwelt, Klima, Natur und Ressourcen” funding program (https://www.z-u-g.org/foerderung/ ki-leuchttuerme-fuer-umwelt-klima-natur-und-ressourcen/) funding program, the overall picture is being considered to determine what contributions to climate change adaptation are actually achievable and how additional greenhouse gas emissions can be avoided or at least reduced in the process, while at the same time establishing and protecting urban ecosystems.
