Hydrobiology and Environmental Biotechnology

Head of department

Research focus

In this department, research activities focus on the elimination of pathogenic microorganisms and micropollutants in wastewater treatment processes. In addition to Batch-tests, molecular biological methods like Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) are used to identify and characterize biological communities during the development of biological processes. Other key activities focus on the detailed investigation of processes for biological nitrogen removal (conversion rates, inhibition), bulking sludge control (microscopic identification of filamentous bacteria) and water quality assessment.

  • Hygiene, Viruses
  • Elimination of micropollutants and pharmaceuticals
  • Sludge bulking problem, scum and foam
  • Residual COD
  • Population dynamics in mixed biocenoses
  • Kinetic processes (Bio-P and nitrogen removal processes)
