2019 Tsinghua International Summer School – Environment

Four students from the Leibniz University Hannover successfully participated in the 2019 Tsinghua International Summer School – Environment, in Beijing (Anna Rode, Janosch Terbach, Zoë Bovermann, Anna Franziska Meyer). The program has been held annually since 2013 at Tsinghua University, one of China''s leading universities, and is hosted by the School of Environment. This year, a total of 83 students from 28 countries took part.

The Summer School aims to impart knowledge about environmentally relevant topics through expert lectures and to understand the current challenges and approaches to solutions in the host country. To deepen the acquired knowledge, places and buildings of ecological relevance were visited. Lecturers included both teachers from Tsinghua University and international guest speakers, such as Prof. ZUO Jiane (Tsinghua University) and Prof. Rosina Bierbaum (University of Michigan). The latter worked, amongst others, as a government advisor to Barack Obama.

Various excursions and workshops were offered to gain insight into the history and culture of China. Among other things, the Great Wall of China was visited, traditional tea ceremonies were held, and an excursion to the former capital Xi''an was offered.

During the two-week program, the participants developed and presented various projects. These projects dealt with the development of innovative strategies to solve China''s existing environmental problems. The project groups were made up of international students from different disciplines and ensured a cultural and interdisciplinary exchange.

Participation in the Summer school is made possible through the project "Platform for United Water Science and Technology Innovations (PLUS)", which is being implemented jointly by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy of Leibniz University Hannover and the School of Environment of Tsinghua University.
