Fermentation residues evaporation to protect the groundwater: for their joint project SEQUESTA, Dr. Paul Stopp and Christopher Speier from the Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Waste Management (ISAH), together with the industrial engineer Marvin Martsch, won a special prize in the category "University & Science" at the Start-up Impulse Competition.

Groundwater is heavily contaminated with nitrate in many places of Germany, especially in regions with intensive livestock farming. This is due to the large quantities of liquid manure, fermentation residues, and slurry that accumulate on farms and end up on the fields. Paul Stopp''s team wants to offer an alternative with the patented SEQUESTA process: in this process, liquid manure and fermentation residues are evaporated in such a way that marketable ammonia is obtained in addition to water. There is a demand for ammonia in the chemical industry, for example. Supported by their mentors PD Dr. Dirk Weichgrebe from ISAH and Dr. Erwin Voß, chairman of Municipal Water Hildesheim, the scientists now want to bring their process to the market as quickly as possible. In the next step, they will raise capital to further develop the process and build a market-ready prototype.

With the Start-up Impulse competition, Sparkasse Hannover and hannoverimpuls award prizes annually to the best innovative start-ups in Region Hannover.
