On 7th May 2019, Professor Volker Epping, President of the Leibniz University Hannover, and Professor Christina von Haaren, Vice-President for International Affairs, received high-ranking representatives of the Tsinghua University from Beijing. The delegation from China was led by the Vice President of the Chinese elite institution, Professor Bin Yang.

The reason for the visit of the 25-member delegation from China was the "Tsinghua Day", which was organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy at Leibniz University. Previously, the School of Environment had organized the "Hannover Day" on October 30th, 2018, where a Memorandum of Understanding on future cooperation was signed. The Tsinghua Day, which took place in the best weather, was the result of Prof. Epping''s counter-invitation, which he extended at the Hanover Day in Beijing in October 2018.

Thus, the event not only served to discuss common future and environmental issues, but also provided a great opportunity to further advance the relations with Tsinghua University and, here, with the School of Environment (SoE). Professor Steffen Marx, Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy, and Professor Kebin He, Dean of the School of Environment, as well as many Chinese guests and members of Leibniz University that were involved in the organization of the joint day. It was decided, among other things, that in addition to the already well-functioning research cooperation, academic exchange and cooperation in student education should be further intensified. Therefore, the work on the development of a double master’s degree for the field of environmental engineering will be started immediately.

The Chinese delegation was particularly pleased that on May 8th the Tsinghua Day was held in the New City Hall of the state capital Hanover, where a professional forestation took place, which was crowned by a very friendly welcome by Mayor Thomas Hermann.

The Institute of Sanitary Engineering and Waste Management of Leibniz University would like to thank the Federal Ministry of Education and Research for financing the project "Platform for United Water Science & Technology Innovations (PLUS)" and thus making this form of cooperation with the highly renowned Tsinghua University possible in the first place. Further information on the cooperation can be found at www.plus-up.de.
