Summa cum laude for Rahul Ramesh Nair's PhD thesis

On June 28th, 2023, Mr. Rahul Ramesh Nair defended his doctoral degree with the title "Biochar from urban organic waste for carbon sequestration". His work was awarded with the highest possible grade: summa cum laude.

His work shows how urban organic waste can be upcycled into synthetic biochar through slow pyrolysis. This process not only produces valuable biochar, but also binds the greenhouse gas causing carbon. Biochar is a useful material for agriculture and environmental protection. The process can help many countries achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals of sustainable waste treatment, carbon sequestration and soil amelioration.

His study was funded by the DAAD, the Leibniz University's Graduate Academy and the BMBF as part of the PYRASOL project.

We congratulate Rahul Ramesh Nair on passing his doctoral examination and wish him all the best.
